We Need an Independent Office of Animal Protection

Animals in WA are not being protected because the same government departments are responsible for both animal welfare and animal industries, and our weak animal cruelty laws are being enforced by under-resourced and unaccountable charities.

We need a new, independent, professional, government-funded body with animal welfare and protection as its focus and mission: an Independent Office of Animal Protection.

‼️NEW‼️Our legislation for an Independent Office of Animal Protection will be discussed in the WA Parliament in early August 2026. Help support our proposal for an IOAP by signing this NEW petition that will also be tabled in the WA Parliament in August. This is an official parliamentary petition, so regardless of whether you have signed our previous petitions, please sign this one by following the instructions at this link. It is only open until 5th August 2026, so sign now and share the link with all your friends and family to help us send a strong message for the animals.

In short, an Independent Office of Animal Protection would stand independently from the agricultural industries that exploit millions of animals each year for profit. It would take on the role of developing policies, procedures, standards and guidelines for the protection of Western Australian animals. It would also oversee investigation of animal cruelty complaints, enforcement of our animal protection laws, and prosecution of those who harm animals.

JOIN THE CALL FOR AN INDEPENDENT OFFICE OF ANIMAL PROTECTION

The Department of Primary Industries (DPIRD) faces an extreme conflict of interest.

They are responsible for the animal agribusiness industry, which abuses and slaughters tens of thousands of animals every year, yet they also develop policies, procedures, standards and guidelines on animal welfare.

With the industrialisation of animal agribusiness increasing, this conflict of interest only gets worse by the day, so it is clear by any measure that the interests of agricultural lobbying groups urgently need to be removed from the development of animal protection guidelines.

Establishing a WA Independent Office of Animal Protection would remove the conflict of interest currently faced by the Department, and afford all animals the protection they deserve.

We must act to secure an IOAP - because animals deserve a professional, empowered, resourced and independent agency to take on the role of animal protection.

So if you haven't already, take action by signing and sharing our petition - and also, please consider becoming a member of the Animal Justice Party today! We would love to have you join us.

Note: by signing this petition you agree to be contacted occasionally by the Animal Justice Party WA.
