Emily Stokes - Candidate for Scarborough
Hi there, I’m Emily. I’m excited to stand for the first time as an Animal Justice Party candidate, representing the Scarborough electorate.
Since understanding the reality of factory farming in the animal agriculture industry, I have been vegan and dedicated to the animal welfare cause. As an undergraduate genetics student and aspiring biotechnologist, I hope to work in the upcoming cultivated meat field — replacing intensive animal farming practices with plant-based agriculture and cell-cultured meat. With government investment in research and development, we can move our food systems towards a sustainable, economically-booming, cruelty-free future.
Guided by the principles of effective altruism, I volunteer much of my time with organisations including Animals Australia, the Australian Alliance for Animals, and Effective Animal Advocacy Australia. Through this work I have successfully organised regular community dinners to raise money for animal charities. Working as a children’s tutor and op shop assistant has also brought me closer to my community.
I believe in innovative solutions to tackle problems, which is why I wholeheartedly support the Animal Justice Party’s plan for Veticare — providing subsidised care for pets and wildlife, and supporting our hard-working vets and vet nurses. If elected, I will also work to establish an Independent Office for Animal Protection to ensure that animal welfare is handled by a well-resourced, independent body to afford all animals the protection they deserve.
“I am running as a candidate because I know just how weak our animal protection laws are, and how voiceless animals are in the political system.”
Emily's Key Priorities in this Election Include:
- Tougher animal protection laws to hold animal abusers to account, including mandatory jail time for severe cruelty.
- An Independent Office of Animal Protection to ensure that the government department responsible for profiting from animal exploitation is no longer the same department regulating animal welfare.
- Ending greyhound racing and other forms of animal exploitation in the name of entertainment and gambling profits.
Every vote for the Animal Justice Party is a step toward a brighter future for all living beings.
