Veticare for Western Australia

The veterinary sector in Western Australia is in crisis.

Rising costs of veterinary care and increased demand are making it harder for our beloved companion animals and WA’s unique wildlife to get the care they need. At the same time, veterinary professionals face overwhelming challenges, leading to burnout and workforce shortages. Rescue organisations are doing incredible work but are stretched thin and act as a bandaid solution. We need to address the root causes, such as overbreeding and abandonment as well as loss of habitat, to prevent so many animals from ending up needing help in the first place.

To address this, we are introducing Veticare for WA — a world-first public healthcare system for animals, modeled on Australia’s Medicare.

Veticare will make veterinary care affordable and accessible while supporting rescue organisations, preventing abandonment, and empowering veterinary professionals across the State.

Help us make Veticare a reality.

The Problem

Western Australia is facing a veterinary care crisis. Rising costs mean many people are struggling to afford treatment, leading to animals going without the care they need or even being surrendered due to financial constraints. Care is increasingly expensive for the public while clinics are simultaneously struggling to stay open in both urban and regional areas.

Companion animal and wildlife rescues are also under immense pressure, relying on donations and volunteers to support the increasing numbers of animals needing care.
Veterinary professionals are leaving the industry in alarming numbers, citing financial pressures, compassion fatigue, and increasing workloads. Clinics are struggling to balance the dual responsibility of fee-paying clients and pro bono wildlife care, while new graduates face immediate emotional and financial burdens in an overstretched system.

If we don’t act now, the situation will only worsen. That’s why we’re introducing Veticare for WA.

The Solution

Veticare is universal health care for animals, modelled on Australia’s Medicare system.

Affordable Veterinary Care
Veticare introduces public veterinary clinics across WA, offering affordable, accessible services for all. Private clinics will also be able to provide bulk-billed or rebated services, ensuring that no animal is left without care.

Support for Rescue Organisations
To ease the burden on companion animal and wildlife rescues, Veticare will establish a Grant Scheme to provide financial support for operations, facility upgrades, and community outreach. Currently, there are far too many animals in need of help, overwhelming rescue organisations and straining resources. To address this, Veticare prioritises incentivising sterilisation programs to reduce overbreeding and stem the flow of animals entering shelters, instead of allowing backyard breeding to profit at the expense of animal welfare. Additionally, much-needed specialised wildlife hospitals will be created to ensure expert care for native animals, reducing the strain on general clinics.

Supporting Veterinary Professionals
Veticare tackles the significant challenges faced by veterinary professionals by introducing initiatives that improve working conditions and reduce pressures within the sector. It includes upskilling vet nurses to take on additional responsibilities, such as surgery preparation and routine check-ups, following the successful nurse practitioner model used in human healthcare. This approach not only enhances job satisfaction for vet nurses but also allows veterinarians to focus on more complex cases. Additionally, Veticare proposes government subsidies and reforms to ease regulatory and financial burdens on clinics, ensuring they can operate sustainably while delivering high-quality care.

Our Focus

  • Make veterinary care affordable: Ensure all animals in WA can access the care they deserve, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
  • Support companion animal and wildlife rescues: Provide the funding and infrastructure needed to address overburdened rescue organisations as well as incentivise companion animals’ to be sterilised to decrease the number of animals currently without a home in WA.
  • Strengthen the veterinary profession: Create sustainable, secure jobs for WA veterinary professionals while improving mental health outcomes and retention.

With Veticare, we are building a compassionate and sustainable future for animals, people, and the veterinary profession in Western Australia.
